As mentioned previously we have two choices for a transcoding server write one ourselves or find one that meets our requirements.
Our research into using Tversity did not go very well and basic questions about how the server transcodes put to the support forum went unanswered. We decided it wasn't worth the effort.
Next we looked at ps3mediaServer, this one is more promising.
It seems to be very dlna compliant and our bridge had no problems "taking" to it, passing basic upnp commands.
A few more promising facts.
- GPL license, we would of rather had mit or lgpl but we can live with gpl.
- Written in java. We have allot of java experience.
- Standard transcoding methods , mcoder, ffmpeg
- Works well with properly formated iphone media
Problem areas
- Transcoding does not work with iphone
- VLC streaming does not work
Planned approach
Branch project and create iphone specific version.
Planned additions
- Support apple http streaming tools beta 3
- Apple push notification support to monitor conversion and report back to device.
